    Abstract:

    After analyzing the irradiance received at the lens of an infrared thermal imager, the formula for the detetion distance from an infrared thermal imager to an extended target is derived according to the theory of infrared radiation. Various factors which have influence on the detection distance from the infrared thermal imager to an extended target are discussed and a model for error calculation is given.
